Glasgow Dentists  - Bad breath

Bad breath (Halitosis) is one of the common dental problem and is the 3rd most frequent reason for seeking dental consultation, following tooth decay and periodontal disease. People of all age group may be suffering from the problem of bad breath, varying from the elderly people to infants. Disabled people always have difficulty maintaining dental hygiene. People who use dentures and appliances in the mouth like dental braces are more prone to halitosis.
Periodontal disease is the one of the main cause of bad breath and other causes are: tooth cavities, tooth decay, gum abscess, debris lying between teeth, impacted tooth, hyperglycemia, sinusitis, allergies, bronchitis, tonsillitis, alcoholism etc. One of the frequent reasons for bad breath is dry mouth. In this situation flow of saliva is retarded and bacteria multiplies rapidly because saliva does not wash away the bacteria around the teeth properly. Dry mouth is caused by some foods that produce dehydration such as: spicy foods, onion, garlic, coffee, diet soda, high protein diet and Tabasco sauce. Long term use of some medicines also produces dry mouth: antihistamines, psychiatric drugs, calcium blockers, medicines for heart and high blood pressure. Smokers are more prone not only to halitosis, but also to the periodontal disease which is also the cause of bad breath.
