A small incision is given over gum to expose jawbone. With a special dental drill a small hole is drilled into jawbone and titanium implant is fixed in that hole and then the gum is stitched back over the implant. Patient is sent to home as he feels better.
The integration of the implant with jawbone takes six months. During these six months patients can continue to wear dentures. After 6 months a similar incision is given over the gum to expose implant. The implant is then used to anchor temporary crown. Again 5-6 weeks later when the surrounding gum tissue has healed, the final permanent crown is attached to the implant.
Properly fixed dental implants can last up to 20 years.
